Should you buy a flail, topper or finishing mower?

Updated: Sep 17

When you decide to buy a mower to cut your grass it very quicky becomes apparent that there are more options that you thought, so we've put together a quick useful guide to help you make an informed decision on which machine is right for the job.

Toppers

Topper Mower

Ideal For Overgrown pasture and paddock areas.

What They Do Toppers are great for “topping” grasses, brambles, light scrub, and saplings.

How They Work This machine has a rotary-style cutting action with two blades, one on each end of the blade carrier. This creates a “topping” effect when mowing. The cuttings are often longer than what other mowers produce and collect in neat rows along the skids.

Flail Mowers

Flail Mower

Perfect For Tackling overgrown areas with thick, dense grass, weeds, and saplings, as well as lawns and sports fields

What Sets Them Apart Flail mowers have hammer blades on a horizontal rotor. As the rotor spins, these blades create finer clippings that mulch down quickly. This encourages grass growth and a thick “sward.” (Sward - the portion of ground covered with grass).

Versatility When the grass growth is more manageable, flail mowers can give lawns and sports fields that fine grass finish. Great for mowing shorter lawns or well maintained paddocks and fields.

Finishing Mowers

Finishing Mower

Best For: Regular mowing of well-maintained grass.

Where to use: Lawns, golf courses, sports fields, schools, camp sites, and other large areas of land.

What to Expect: Finishing mowers provide a clean cut, leaving your grass looking tidy and well-groomed.
